Writing Your Resume Dont Get Fancy

Writing Your Resume Dont Get FancyWriting Your Resume Dont Get Fancy3Over the last several years, resumes have gotten quite the makeover. And its leid just professional resume writers spiffing up their clients documents. Regular professionals have decided to take their resumes to the next level with formatting, graphics, tables, charts, and more. But this swing towards the fancy resume might actually hurt your chances of landing the job. Try reading your resume on your phone, recommends executive resume writer Donna Svei in her article on fancy resumes. If you dont like the experience, then neither will recruiters and hiring managers.Yes, you read that correctly the majority of hiring managers (about 60%) are now reading resumes on their phones, either in addition to or instead of on their computers. Documents that contain extra style elements, graphics, or other non-basic content may be difficult, if not impossible, to read on a phone. These fancy formatting options can also make it d ifficult for applicant tracking systems (where your resume goes when you apply online) to read your resume, which means those systems wont be able to see your keywords and related skills, and wont send your resume onto the next step- being reviewed by a human hiring manager. In the process of writing your resume? To make sure your resume is readable rather than fancy, follow these guidelines1. Keep your colors, fonts, and formatting simple.Svei recommends avoidingthe followingColored backgroundsShadingColored fontsMultiple fontsColumnsGraphsSidebars and pulloutsWatermark-like background images2. Use a sans-serif font.Sans-serif literally means without serifs, which are the little, extended strokes at the ends of letters. Times New Roman is a serif font, whereas Arial is not. Serif fonts tend to be more difficult to read on screens, which is why we recommend you dont use them on your resume. Some great options for sans-serif fonts are Calibri, Helvetica, Trebuchet MS, Tahoma, Verdana, and Gill Sans MT.Keep in mind that not everyones word processing software of choice will include every font, so either choose a widely available font like Calibri or be sure to send a PDF of your resume, which will maintain your font choice no matter where the resume is read.3. Use columns or sidebars sparingly.Creating these separate spaces on your resume can make it harder for humans to read on mobile phones and for applicant tracking systems to scan. What are you using columns or sidebars for? What sort of information are you trying to convey in them? Is there another way to portray that information, perhaps a simple list, bullet points, or in a paragraph?4. Dont use pre-formatted templates.Microsoft Word and other document software programs offer resume templates that let you add your information to a pre-formatted document. These templates tend to use space poorly, they involve too many style elements, and they are very difficult to customize and change to your needs.Youre much better off formatting your own resume using these simple style guidelines.5. Look at your resume on your phoneHave you ever opened your resume document on your phone to see what it looks like? As a certified resume writer, I will begrudgingly admit that I only did this within the last year. Its an eye-opening experience. Youll see immediately what youre doing well and what you need to improve.Be sure to look at your resume in different file formats such as .doc and PDF to get the full picture of what youre putting out into the world. No resume will look perfect on a phone, but using simpler formatting and fewer design elements will make it much easier for recruiters and hiring managers to scan your resume and find your best qualifications and attributes fast. And thats the ultimate goal of your resume, right? RightIf youre hoping to land a remote job specifically, check out our webinar on writing your resume for remote jobs

5 Factors That Can Hurt Your Performance Reviews

5 Factors That Can Hurt Your Performance Reviews5 Factors That Can Hurt Your Performance Reviews5 Factors That Can Hurt Your Performance ReviewsI was impressed by the points Scot Herrick made in this post on his blog, Cube Rules. He draws attention to some seemingly mundane tasks that might have more weight in how others perceive your job performance than you think. Did you ever imagine that the way you structure your emailles to colleagues could take a toll on how management views your performance at review time? Scot didEffective performers use email to show their performance. They are short, to the point, and ask for what is needed up front. Too many of us have yet to learn that long emails, convoluted questions and poor email response times hurt your job performance. What other things does he find negatively impact performance reviews?Submitting status reports with the thought that no one pays attention to them, and focusing more on activities and less on accomplishmentsNot managi ng meetings properly by being unprepared, off topic, or disrespectful to others opinionsCommunicating poorly with management, meandering through points and taking forever to address solutionsWhining about things you cant control, like other department shortcomings (we could all learn a lesson from that one)Assuming results count more than perception If you cant show your performance in a status report or dont do well in meetings, it looks like your job performance sucks. That last one really stuck out to me because its so true.Perception is huge in any job, but it takes some work to figure out what matters to management and what doesnt. Maybe your boss doesnt mind that your emails tend to be long and detailed, but hates the way you CC him on every email you send to your colleagues, especially when he doesnt need to know half of whats going on between you.Whats important to one boss might not matter to the next. Take, for instance, arriving early and leaving late every day Your effort s could earn brownie points from one manager but go unnoticed by another. Or, one manager might reprimand you for taking an extra 5 minutes for lunch, while others simply wont care as long as you get the job done.Perception is everything

Survey Career success still seen as far more important for men in 2017

Survey Career success still seen as far more important for men in 2017 Survey Career success still seen as far more important for men in 2017 It is 2017 and women are making inroads of progress toward being seen as bosses, executives, and company founders. But a striking new Pew Research Center survey finds that the default for society’s vision of working ambition is still a man.Survey: Men are valued for the ambition, women are valued for their looks and parental abilitiesGender stereotypes about women being homemakers and men being breadwinners persist. This past August and September, a group of 4,000 nationally representative U.S. adults were asked to answer what pressures they thought men and women faced, and their answers made it clear that men are still seen as the main provider in family units. The top pressures for men were earning money for their families and being successful in their careers.  While three in four Americans agreed that the biggest pressure point for men is supporting their family financially, only 40% agreed that this was a top priority for women.Meanwhile, more than 70% of Americans thought that the biggest pressures for women are being an involved parent and being physically attractive. In the list of presumed societal pressures, being a breadwinner or good at their job came in last for women. The reason for the gendered differences may become clearer when you see how the majority of Americans view men and women’s best contributions to society. When the participants were asked open-ended questions about what traits society values most in men and women, the top values for men were honesty, professional success, and ambition. Meanwhile, when asked what were the most valuable qualities a women could have, participants’ top answers were: being  physically attractive, nurturing, and smart.More education means more pressure on men’s careers - and less on their child rearingAccording to Pew, college-educated adults are more likely than their less-educated peers to say that men face a lot of pressure to be successful in their careers. At the same time, the highly educated ar e less likely to say that men face pressure to be involved parents or to be physically attractive.“Three-quarters of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree say that men face a lot of pressure to be successful in their job or career, compared with 68% with some college experience and 62% with a high school diploma or less,” Pew reports. “By contrast, 61% with a high school diploma or less say that men face a lot of pressure to be an involved parent, compared with 46% with some college experience and 38% with at least a bachelor’s degree.”Less educated adults more likely to see women as facing financial and professional pressuresAnother finding from Pew was that the more degrees you have, the less likely you are to believe that women face financial and work pressures to succeed and make money. While half of Americans with a high school degree or less agreed that the top pressures for women were financially supporting their families and succeeding in their chosen careers, that number drops to 36% and 43% for people with some college experience, and 31% and 40% for people with a bachelor’s degree. The findings are a reminder that you can well-schooled and still not be educated in the challenges that women face to succeed outside of the domestic sphere. As multiple studies have shown, the gender gap in women’s paychecks and their representation in powerful positions closes when women and men are seen as equally capable at being parents and at being successful employees. The Pew Research Center survey shows that we have a long way to go before that’s the case.

9 Things You Need to Stop Doing if You Want to Be Taken Seriously

9 Things You Need to Stop Doing if You Want to Be Taken Seriously 9 Things You Need to Stop Doing if You Want to Be Taken Seriously Want to be known as a rockstar around your office? Here’s a tip: to really earn a stellar reputation , you can’t just do your individual tasks well. Often, you also have to master soft skills around how you speak and present yourself. But the challenge is that this workplace etiquette tends to be an unspoken rule - since you can’t exactly flip to a page in your employee handbook to read up on how to wow leadership with your communication style,  for example, it’s easy to make mistakes. To shed light on some of these common workplace faux pas , we reached out to a handful of career experts. If you’re serious about earning your colleagues’ respect and improving your standing in the office, it’s time to nip these nine bad habits in the bud. Your coworkers may understand if you show up late by a minute or two to the occasional meeting, but making tardiness a regular habit is a surefire way to lose credibility in your colleagues’ eyes. “Being late shows a complete disrespect for the time of those around you. Even when you produce great work, it will be overshadowed by your inability to get yourself to a meeting on time,” says career coach Angela Copeland . The good news? There are plenty of ways to fix this bad habit. Copeland recommends diligently keeping track of meetings using a calendar (enabling reminders if you’re using an electronic one). In addition, “block out time in your schedule for traveling to a meeting, and then add a few minutes… to be sure you’re able to arrive early,” Copeland says. When you’re new to the office, early on in your career , or just a bit shy, it’s not uncommon to hold back around your coworkers. But “if you overthink comments and end up silent because you’re afraid of being wrong… you risk limiting your influence,” says Mikaela Kiner, Founder/CEO of UniquelyHR . “The problem with self-censorship and being too quiet is that it masks your intelligence. Co-workers may speculate that you are not engaged, or aren’t a team player due to your lack of participation.” Having a hard time coming out of your shell? “Decide how many times you will speak up during the next meeting,” Kiner recommends. “Maybe start small, let’s say you plan to make three comments. Bring three post-its with you  and when you have something to say, quickly jot it down then say what’s on your mind. It’s easy to measure - once your post-its have all been used, you’ve reached your goal.” Additionally, “choose someone you trust who’s in a lot of meetings with you, and share that your goal is to speak up more. If the person is your manager or the meeting facilitator, s/he can call on you when it looks like you have something to say.” While failure to speak up can damage your standing in the workplace, dominating the conversation can be just as bad. “Too often, young and eager employees think that being vocal will make supervisors respect them more,” says Andrea Gerson, Founder of Resume Scripter . “If you fall on the more outgoing end of the spectrum, try to be more mindful and take in what your superiors are trying to teach you. Be eager to hear about how they got where they are.” Your teachers didn’t spend all those years drilling grammatical rules into your head for no reason - “ bad grammar will derail even the most promising career,” says Roy Cohen, career coach and author of The Wall Street Professional’s Survival Guide . If you struggle with the written (or spoken) word, “take a communications class or read a book on grammar. Then practice - just knowing what you should do is not enough to improve your interpersonal skills.  The investment upfront is minimal and the benefits over the long term are enormous,” Cohen says. Ever try and downplay a mistake you made, or tell your boss you sent an email when it’s still sitting in your inbox? You’re going to want to cut that out. “In the moment, white lies may seem like no big deal. But, in the world of business, they can come back to bite you in a big way,” Copeland says. “If you’re in the habit of telling white lies, begin to make a note when you do it. Identify similarities or patterns and work to correct yourself in the future before they occur. When a white lie is noticed, it can ruin your entire reputation. And, why would you want to do that for something you worked so hard for?” Sharing great ideas and strong opinions is a good thing - downplaying or contradicting yourself afterwards, not so much. “ While being humble is a terrific trait, you should take pride in your accomplishments and accept credit for what you’ve achieved. Your employer won’t take you seriously if you don’t have confidence in yourself,” Gerson says. But if being confident is often easier said than done for you, Gerson recommends the following tip: “Make a ‘Winning’ folder in your inbox and save all the great feedback that you get. You can later review it when you have moments of doubting your capabilities.” The next time you think about second guessing yourself, hold onto these highlights to help you stay the course. You might think blaming a coworker for a missed deadline or confusing directions for an error in your project will save your skin, but the truth is, it reflects back poorly on you. “Nobody likes excuse makers . Even if something’s not your fault, you should do everything in your power to fix it,” Copeland says. “If it’s your project, work to come up with solutions rather than problems. Find a way to get things done without pointing your finger at coworkers. Someone who can make things happen while not placing blame will go far.” Just because it looks great when you’re out on the town with your friends on the weekend, doesn’t mean it’ll work for the office. “When you dress in a manner that’s too casual at work, you will quickly lose the respect of your coworkers… Whether you’re wearing business casual in a business environment or casual in a business casual work setting, the people you’re working with are noticing. They may not verbalize that they think you look silly, but you can bet they’re thinking it,” Copeland says. “Pay close attention to what is acceptable dress in your workplace. This is especially true when you’re changing industries, moving to a new city, or going up the corporate ladder . Each company has different expectations about what’s normal. And, many of those expectations aren’t always written down somewhere. Take the time to observe those around you and follow suit,” she suggests. Pro tip: If you’re at all questioning whether or not an item of clothing is office appropriate, it probably isn’t. Just like you don’t want your wardrobe to be too casual, you don’t want your emails to be too casual , either. “It may be something you’ve become completely accustomed to, but too many exclamation points and happy faces will not help your corporate emails,” Copeland says. “Make a point to count the number of exclamation points you’re using in an email. If the number exceeds two, try to decide if there’s any way you can reduce the amount of punctuation.” Likewise, lay off the emojis and emoticons . “Save smiley faces for times when you’re close friends with someone,” Copeland says.

The award honors the legacy of Kate Gleason, the first woman to be welcomed into ASME as a full member. Burns is being acknowledged for her outstanding engineering and business leadership, and her distinguished career culminating in achieving the distinction of being the first black woman to lead a Fortune 100 company. Burns started at Xerox as an intern in 1980, when the company was a leader in the global photocopying market. She later assumed roles in product development and planning, just as the company had begun positioning itself as a digital document technologies company. After leading several business teams including the company’s color business and office network printing business teams including the company’s color business and office network printing business from 1992 to 2000, Burns was named senior vice president of corporate strategic services, a position that put her in charge of the company’s manufacturing and supply chain operations. After being named as president and member of the board of directors in 2007, Burns became CEO of Xerox in July 2009. Shortly afterward, she made the largest acquisition in the company’s history - the $6.4 billion purchase of Affiliated Computer Services, catapulting the company’s presence in the $500 billion business services market and extending the company’s reach into diverse areas of business process and IT outsourcing. On May 20, 2010, Burns became chairman of Xerox. Burns is also an active in a number of community, educational and nonprofit organizations, including FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), the National Academy Foundation, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the U.S. Olympic Committee. What They Dont Teach You About How to Hire

What They Don’t Teach You About How to Hire What They Don’t Teach You About How to Hire What they don't teach you about hiring in school is that hiring is hard. And knowing how to hire is especially challenging in today’s employment market given the scarcity of skilled talent. Yet many managers sort of wing it. No one has ever taught them the proper way to hire - even the basics, like writing a job ad, putting together a compensation package, evaluating resumes and what to ask in interviews, let alone keeping up with constantly evolving labor laws. But understanding how to hire is arguably the most important thing a manager needs to know. Do it poorly, and you risk making a bad hire. The hard lesson of a poor hire asked executives about how much time a week managers have to spend coaching and/or supervising poorly performing employees. The answer: 10.4 hours. In other words, more than a quarter of the workweek is wasted. That’s time that could be spent more wisely had they made better hiring decisions. Bad hires are expensive, too. A recent CareerBuilder study involving more than 2,200 hiring and human resources managers found that a bad hire can cost a business nearly $15,000. As costly as it is to correct a hiring mistake, the money isn’t necessarily what concerns employers most. In another survey, CFOs said the single greatest impact of a poor hiring decision is: Lower staff morale (39 percent) Lost productivity (34 percent) Monetary costs (25 percent) Managers who aren’t familiar with the best hiring practices may not be thorough in their efforts, leading to a poor hire. In a different survey, nearly half of managers at small and midsize businesses said most hiring managers underestimate the complexity of the hiring process. HIRING? WE CAN HELP YOU! Recruiters know the ropes This is where recruiters can add value. A reputable staffing firm - especially one specializing in the field where you’re seeking skilled professionals - can help you with all the complexities of hiring you never learned in school. They’re really good at it because it’s all they do. They can cast a wider net. When working with a staffing agency, you gain access to their vast network of job seekers. Robert Half, for example, has a comprehensive database of job candidates, many of whom are available to start working right away. Recruiters also know how to word job descriptions so they can attract even more candidates to an opening. They can target passive candidates. Many employed professionals who are not actively looking for a new job are nonetheless interested in promising openings at other companies - if they hear of them, that is. Specialized staffing firms work with these so-called passive candidates every day and can turn them on to your openings. Without the help of a recruiter, this source of valuable talent may not ever be aware that you’re hiring. They give you speed. Leaving a position open for an extended time means lost productivity and stress on your staff. Staffing professionals can also help you speed up your hiring process and staff openings more promptly. That’s because they have so many great candidates ready to work. They’ve already done the necessary skills testing and can present pre-evaluated candidates for you to interview. Even though there’s no “hiring school” to teach managers the ropes, bringing in skilled talent that will mesh well with the rest of your team is one of your major responsibilities as a company leader. Learn as much as you can about the do’s and don’ts of hiring. And to make it easier on yourself, work with a specialized staffing firm.

What To Do When Youve Lied on Your Resume

What To Do When Youve Lied on Your Resume What To Do When Youve Lied on Your Resume Youve lied on your resume or stretched the truth a little or a lot, and now youre worried. Can you get caught? What happens if an employer finds out that your resume or job application isnt accurate? What do you now? Lying on your resume is a bad idea for many reasons, not the least of which is that you’re likely to get caught. From the initial background check to the multiple meetings that make up the interview process, there are just too many opportunities to reveal that you’ve been less than truthful. Even if you make it through and get hired, you’re not off the hook: history is full of examples of high-level executives who lost their positions and their reputations after being caught embellishing their resume or curriculum vitae. If youre caught lying before youre hired, you wont get a job offer. If the organization discovers you lied after youve been put on the payroll, you can be fired. Lying on your resume can also impact your future employment. FindLaw notes that it can be harder to get hired when you have a termination for cause in your work history. The question is whether its worth taking a chance on being caught in a lie. But if you’re reading this, you already know that its a dilemma. Your problem is that you already stretched the truth on your resume, and now you’re trying to cope with the possible consequences. Maybe you just got a call to schedule an interview for a perfect job. However â€" and this is a big “however” â€" you lied on your resume when you applied so the gaps in your employment history would be a bit smaller or so your last job sounded better. Perhaps you even added a job or two to make your resume look more impressive. And now the company wants you to fill out a job application. When you complete the application, you are legally affirming your dates of employment and your employment history. The company may verify those dates with your previous employer. Most Common Resume Lies If you have lied, you have a lot of company. A CareerBuilder survey reports that more than half of employers (75%) have caught a lie on a resume. Think about that: more than half the people you know might be guilty of telling fibs on their CV.   Another CareerBuilder survey reported on what job seekers tried to get away with most often: Embellished skill sets: 62%Embellished responsibilities: 54%Dates of employment: 39%Job titles: 31%Academic degrees: 28% What To Do When Youve Lied on Your Resume Youve done it, but now youre worried. What do you do? Do you take a chance that you wont get caught? Or, do you try and fix the problem without jeopardizing your chances of getting the job? It wasnt smart to lie on your resume in the first place, because it can come back to haunt you. Even after youve been hired, lying on a job application is grounds for termination at any point in the future â€" even years later. That said, what can you do now that  the damage is already done? Here are options for how to handle it when your resume contains something other than the truth: Option 1. Update your resume. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees and no surefire way to keep yourself in consideration for the job, let alone get an offer, but you could update your resume â€" fix the dates, change some of the wording, and so on â€"  and tell the interviewer that you noticed some errors on your resume and have a revised copy. Option 2. Come clean and tell the truth. Another option is to tell the hiring manager the truth, which will probably knock you out of consideration. However, at least you wont be hired based on a lie and wont have to worry about someone finding out after the fact. Option 3. Do nothing. The third option is to do nothing and hope you don’t get caught. The danger in that is if they have you fill out a job application, you need to be honest because you can get fired at any point in the future if they find out and/or if they check your references and verify dates of employment. Option 4. Withdraw your application. Another alternative is to withdraw your job application. You dont have to give a reason why. You can simply thank the employer for the invitation and say youre not interested in the position at this time. You have obviously lost your chance of getting the job, but this is the safest option if you dont want to explain or to have to deal with the consequences of lying. The Consequences Unfortunately, there’s really no safe alternative other than withdrawing, because, with any scenario, there’s a chance they won’t consider you for the job once they find out. Plus, again, you could be fired in the future if the company finds out you didnt tell the truth. Fix Your Resume If youve fudged the dates on your resume, fix it. Instead of having to worry about getting caught in a lie, consider  explaining the gaps in your cover letter. That way you’ll be proactively addressing them and not having to scramble after the fact. Once youve got the facts straight, consider tweaking your resume to make it sound better. A few small changes can help you make a better impression on the hiring manager without having to stretch the truth.
